Common Sense Today
“Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one: for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries BY A GOVERNMENT, which we might expect in a country WITHOUT GOVERNMENT, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer. Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built upon the ruins of the bowers of paradise. For were the impulses of conscience clear, uniform and irresistibly obeyed, man would need no other lawgiver; but that not being the case, he finds it necessary to surrender up a part of his property to furnish means for the protection of the rest; and this he is induced to do by the same prudence which in every other case advises him, out of two evils to choose the least. Wherefore, security being the true design and end of government, it unanswerably follows that whatever form thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the least expense and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others.”
The above paragraph initiates Common Sense written by Thomas Paine in 1776 and I ask you have times changed? Most certainly we have no king or queen, but certainly our own American version of royal families seeking their lot in positions where they are above us all. I have added a link to the entire text of both Common Sense (1776) and The Crisis (1776-1783), the latter being a series of pamphlets written by Paine and read by a larger percentage of Americans than will watch this years Super Bowl. We can all give thanks to The Crisis which is often credited for giving our troops the drive to continue their often uphill battle against the British which gave us the very freedom that we enjoy today. Most certainly both of these works are overlooked in our government schools because they stand for exactly what modern day liberalism is against; freedom, liberty and individualism.
Yet, for all that Thomas Paine wrote, one must wonder why these continue to be times that try men’s souls. If we were to look around us today, we would see that most certainly history repeats itself with an enemy that may no longer be British, but poses no less of a danger than the big government and oppression of King George. When Paine speaks of calamities in nations with no government he may as well be talking about illegal aliens having unfettered access to our soil and our tax dollars.
It seems that lately many people have been asking me who can save our nation and give us the direction that we truly need to rebound to the position of the greatest nation on earth. My answer is often that we are already the greatest nation on earth, but we have those with an agenda who seek to destroy this. The challenge to those who cherish our way of life is to find the very leader that can inspire us in a Reaganesque sort of way. While President’s such as Ronald Reagan only come but once in a lifetime, there are most certainly diamonds in the rough who can inspire us with that type of leadership, vision and promise.
The main problem that I see with the Republican Party today is that the leadership believes that they need to move to the left to keep the electorate in their corner. This could not be further from the truth, and if they don’t wake up fast they are going to suffer irreversible defeats in 2008. Simply put, the agenda of the Republican Party is not what conservatives want, and contrary to popular myth most Americans are conservative when the true definition of limited government and individual liberties are explained to them.
Conservatism isn’t about abortion or taxes or guns or political affiliation, rather it is about freedom and doing what is right. When this happens, all other issues of importance fall into place. Conservatives seek to preserve our Constitution by strict interpretation while liberals believe that this document is subject to interpretation based upon the times. Where conservative beliefs would mandate a right to free speech, liberals believe that freedom of speech only extends to the point where one not be offended, hence the agenda of political correctness.
What our nation is sorely lacking today is a truly conservative candidate who transcends party lines with a vision that exposes modern day liberalism. When Reagan did this he garnered forty percent of the male, Democratic vote. When you explain to any man, who has not been emasculated by our liberal society, that their rights may disappear if they continue to support the agenda of the modern day Democratic Party ideals, they will most often cast a vote that will place the individual over the collectivist agenda of this party and their anti-individualism.
There is not a Republican candidate present at this time who has the ability to be the visionary that America needs. Considering there are 300 million legal residents in this nation, which is a sad commentary on the state of our union. Sure, there are viable candidates such as McCain, Guiliani or Romney who could do a respectable job and are certainly better than anything Democrats have to offer, but none have the Reaganesque vision which we currently need which will serve to bridge the gaps by reuniting our nation as one under God by empowering people to achieve the American Dream through hard work by ending a reliance on government handouts that so many seek nowadays.
Perhaps it is time for the GOP leadership to look outside the beltway to find the right person who can stand up with the vision of what America and Americans need and has the oratorical capability of selling conservative fact over the science fiction of liberalism.
My vote is going to the one person who can stand up with a platform that is as simple as this:
1) English will be the official language of the United States of America.
2) The border is closed unless you have a marketable job skill and come here legally.
3) If you are in our nation illegally, you have thirty days to leave or we will find you and put you on a chaingang for the next 20 years in order to beautify our nation. If you are an employer of illegals you have thirty days to get them out of here or face the same punishment plus the loss of your business.
4) The Federal Income Tax will be repealed and a balance budget will be required for my signature. Congress will have to get rid of enough pork and wasteful entitlement programs to make this happen without sacrificing national defense. Believe me, this can be done.
5) All Americans will have the right to opt out of government social security by agreeing to set up their own private retirement accounts.
6) Tuition tax vouchers will be granted to all parents which will end the government school monopoly as all schools will get to compete for these tax dollars.
7) Energy dependence will be achieved through increased domestic drilling and refinery construction. The goal is to be independent of any oil from hostile sources, including Venezuela and Iran within four years.
8) Any act of Islamic fascism will result in immediate death as we don’t have time to play games.
9) To vote you must be a non criminal U.S. citizen who understands basic civics demonstrated through your ability to name your House Representative, Two U.S. Senators and the majority of Supreme Court justices before a ballot, printed only in English, is handed to you.
10) All students will be required to achieve proficiency in basic economics and western culture classes prior to graduation at which time they will be bound by a government ban on political correctness including, but not limited to race baiting, victimization, entitlementalism or promoting collectivism.
My guess, and I am usually right, is that millions upon millions would follow suit and vote for this type of candidate who will say and do what most of us think and then thankfully an abomination such as Hillary wouldn’t stand a snowballs chance in hell of even being competitive.
